Prague Jewish Quarter Tours

Josefov's synagogues and the Old Jewish Cemetery sit a few streets from Old Town Square, every interior is on one Jewish Museum ticket, and all of it closes on Saturdays. Prague Jewish Quarter tours differ on one thing first: whether that ticket is inside the price.

12,000+ gravestones in the Old Jewish Cemetery
700+ years of services in the Old-New Synagogue
4,468 reviews on the pick, rated 4.7
Quick answer The pick, the lowest price and the ticket alone

Prague Jewish Quarter tours start at $21.74 for a 2.5-hour small group walk without tickets, the pick with four synagogues and the cemetery is $74, and the museum ticket alone is $51. The streets of Josefov are free to walk, but every interior sits on one Jewish Museum ticket, so a tour earns its price either through the admissions inside it or through the explaining. The whole complex closes on Saturdays and Jewish holidays.

Prague Jewish Quarter Tours Compared

Each "from" price is the lowest adult rate on the listing. The Private Synagogues and Jewish Quarter Tour is one price for a group of up to 2, not per person. The Jewish Quarter Tour with Tickets covers the Maisel, Pinkas, Spanish and Old-New synagogues and the Old Jewish Cemetery, the Private Jewish Quarter Tour includes the Jewish Museum and Old-New entrance fee, the Jewish Quarter and Museum Tour includes a €25 entrance fee, the Private Synagogues and Jewish Quarter Tour lists admission of about €14-€20 per person, and the Jewish Quarter Ticket is the admission itself. The other walks cover the guide only, or exteriors, and leave you to buy the ticket separately. The Jewish Quarter Ticket is not a guided walk at all, just entry with a short introduction. The booking platform handles payment, and free cancellation runs to 24 hours before departure on every listing here.

What a Guide Adds Inside

The walls of the Pinkas Synagogue carry nearly 80,000 names by the museum's count (77,297 in another published count) of Bohemian and Moravian Jewish victims of the Shoah, written by hand between 1955 and 1960, and upstairs hang 4,387 drawings made by children in Theresienstadt. The Old Jewish Cemetery holds more than 12,000 gravestones stacked in up to twelve burial layers, and Rabbi Loew's grave from 1609 is the most visited, tied to the Golem legend. In the Old-New Synagogue, in use for over 700 years, a guide can tell the Golem story and point out Rabbi Loew's seat, empty since his death. The 1893-1913 slum clearance flattened most of the ghetto and left Pařížská, the avenue of luxury shops you walk past today, with only six synagogues, the cemetery and the Town Hall surviving.

The ticketless walks show the buildings from the outside only. The Old Town and Jewish Quarter Walking Tour states plainly that the whole 90 minutes takes place outside with no entrance to the synagogues or the cemetery. The Small Group Jewish Quarter Walk, the 2-Hour Jewish Quarter Tour and the Old Town, New Town and Jewish Quarter Tour list a licensed guide as the only inclusion, so budget for the museum ticket on top if you want the interiors. Since 1 January 2024 the Old-New Synagogue has no separate ticket either, it sits inside the unified Jewish Town circuit.

From Ghetto to Josefov in Six Dates

Guides on every Prague Jewish Quarter tour tell the same story in front of the same buildings, so it helps to know the dates before you go. The table gives the turning points in the history of the quarter, with the figures from the Wikipedia articles on Josefov, the Jewish Town Hall and the history of the Jews in Prague.

What you see today is mostly what the clearance left. Pařížská and the apartment blocks around it went up on the cleared ground, and the old lanes survive only in the line of the cemetery wall and the six synagogues. About 977 people lived in Josefov in 2021. The lower clock on the Jewish Town Hall has Hebrew numerals and runs counterclockwise, and the hall itself is closed to the public, so it is a stop you see from Maiselova.

The Museum Ticket and Private Guides

If you would rather go at your own pace, the ticket alone costs $51 with a short introduction. If you want a guide to yourself, the private listings cover the same ground.

The Ticket on Its Own

The Jewish Quarter Ticket costs $51 and is entry, not a walking tour. You collect it at Maiselova 5, get a 20-minute guided introduction in English, then visit the Old-New, Spanish, Maisel and Pinkas synagogues, the Old Jewish Cemetery and the Robert Guttmann Gallery exhibitions on your own. It is valid 1 day on this listing and skips the ticket line.

The ticket does not name the Klausen Synagogue, the Ceremonial Hall or the Jerusalem Synagogue, so none of those are covered. Bags over 30 litres are refused at the entrance and the museum has no luggage storage, so travel light. The whole complex is closed every Saturday and on Jewish holidays.

The Private Options

The private listings give you a guide to yourself, and the pricing works differently on each. The Private Jewish Quarter Tour costs $165.89 per person with the Jewish Museum and Old-New entrance fee included over 3 hours. The Private Synagogues and Jewish Quarter Tour is $189 per group of up to 2 for 2.5 hours, with hotel pick-up, drop-off and admission of roughly €14-€20 per person included, which works out as the roomier private option for a couple.

The Jewish Quarter and Museum Tour is a private group at $81 per person for 3 hours with a €25 entrance fee included and a guide certified by the Jewish Museum.

Both listings run from Prague and neither enters the Prague Jewish Quarter, so treat them as a second day rather than an add-on to a Josefov walk. Figures come from the listings.

What Terezin Is and Going on Your Own

The Terezin fortress town was founded in 1784 and named after Maria Theresa. The ghetto operated there from 24 November 1941 to 8 May 1945. About 40,000 arrivals came from Prague, 33,521 people died in the ghetto before 20 April 1945 and 88,196 were deported onward to extermination camps. The Small Fortress opens 9:00-17:00 from April to October and 9:00-16:00 from November to March, and the Ghetto Museum opens 9:00-17:00 year-round. The memorial itself suggests 4-6 hours for both parts.

Can you visit Terezin from Prague in a day? Yes, but choose carefully. A 4.5-hour trip such as the Terezin Tour from Prague gives you a 1-hour guided tour of the Small Fortress, and its review summary says some travelers wanted more time at the Ghetto Museum. A 6-7 hour trip such as the Terezin Ghetto and Camp Tour is closer to what the memorial suggests for both parts. On your own, bus 413 from Letňany metro takes about an hour and costs CZK 100, or the train to Bohušovice nad Ohří takes about 1.5 hours with 4 km left to the town.

The Synagogues and the Old Jewish Cemetery

Five of the six sites below sit on the single Jewish Museum ticket: the Pinkas, Spanish, Maisel and Old-New synagogues and the Old Jewish Cemetery. The Jerusalem Synagogue stands outside the circuit and sells its own entry at the door. Each has its own guide: the Old-New Synagogue, the Pinkas Synagogue, the Old Jewish Cemetery, the Spanish Synagogue and the Jerusalem Synagogue.

Old-New Synagogue

Europe's oldest working synagogue dates from the last third of the 13th century and has held services for over 700 years, apart from 1942 to 1945. Rabbi Loew's seat to the right of the altar has stayed empty since his death in 1609. To see it with the ghetto's other interiors on one booking, check Jewish Quarter Tour with Tickets.

Upstairs hang 4,387 drawings made by children in Theresienstadt between 1942 and 1944. Loud commentary is banned inside, so guides cover it outside, as on Jewish Quarter Tour with Tickets.

Making the Walk Work on Your Own

Plan 2-3 hours for the museum circuit, more if you take the Jerusalem Synagogue as an extra. The museum advises avoiding the 11:00-15:00 peak, when mornings and late afternoons are much quieter. Bags over 30 litres are refused at the entrance and there is no luggage storage, so travel light. Exposed arms, shoulders or midriff are not allowed, and men cover their heads in the Old Jewish Cemetery with their own cap or a borrowed one.

This is the self-guided walking tour of the Jewish Quarter in its cheapest form: the streets are free, and the interiors need the ticket. The paid version is Jewish Quarter Ticket, $51 with a 20-minute English introduction, valid 1 day. There is no free walking tour that goes inside, because every interior sits behind the ticket, so a listing marked free covers only exteriors such as Old Town and Jewish Quarter Walking Tour at $22.

Hours, Saturdays and Jewish Holidays

The museum sites keep seasonal hours but never open on Shabbat. Build your day around the table below and check the museum calendar for holiday dates.

Seasonal Opening Hours

The Jewish Museum publishes one set of seasonal hours for its sites. Ticket sales end 30 minutes before closing and entry is guaranteed up to 30 minutes before closing. The figures below come from the museum's opening hours page.

SeasonMuseum sites openNote
2 January to 31 March9:00-16:30Old-New Synagogue opens 9:00-17:00
April9:00-18:00Pesach closures in early April
1 May to 31 August9:00-19:00Longest days, biggest crowds
1 September to 17 October9:00-18:00Autumn holiday closures cluster here
18 October to 31 December9:00-16:30No published holiday closures after early October

Saturdays and the Holiday Calendar

The whole complex is closed every Saturday and on Jewish holidays. The museum publishes the specific dates on its own calendar, and one reviewer on a Jewish holiday on the private museum tour Jewish Quarter and Museum Tour could not enter anywhere. Temporary changes other than holidays are announced at least 24 hours ahead on the museum website.

The Jerusalem Synagogue runs Sunday to Friday 10:00-17:00, also closed Saturdays and Jewish holidays. One source lists it open to 18:00 on weekdays, so check the door if you arrive late.

This hits the tours directly. Jewish Quarter Tour with Tickets does not run on Saturdays or Jewish holidays, and the self-guided Jewish Quarter Ticket is unusable on those days. The exterior-only walks still run, so if your only free day is a Saturday, pair Small Group Jewish Quarter Walk with the facades. Check the date on each tour card before booking.

Before You Walk Into Josefov

Do

  • Do buy the ticket or a tour that includes it before you arrive, because every interior from the Pinkas Synagogue to the cemetery sits behind the one Jewish Museum ticket and the sellers at the counters close 30 minutes before closing.
  • Do go early or late, because the museum itself advises avoiding the 11:00-15:00 peak when mornings and late afternoons are much quieter.
  • Do dress with covered shoulders and arms, because exposed arms, shoulders or midriff, swimwear and bare feet are refused at the synagogues.
  • Do carry a cap or accept a borrowed one, because men must cover their heads on entering the Old Jewish Cemetery.
  • Do check the museum calendar for Jewish holidays before you book, because the whole complex closes on Saturdays and holidays and one reviewer found every door shut on a holiday.

Don't

  • Don't bring a big bag, because bags over 30 litres are refused at the entrance and the museum has no luggage storage.
  • Don't plan to eat or drink on the way through, because food, drinks, ice cream and smoking are banned in all visitor areas.
  • Don't bring your dog, because dogs are banned except certified assistance dogs.
  • Don't try to enter each site twice, because each visitor site may be entered only once per museum ticket.

Is a Jewish Quarter Tour Worth It

The streets cost nothing and the ticket alone opens every door, so a tour has to earn its price through the explaining and the logistics.

What we genuinely like

  • A guide explains what the street itself does not, from the 1893-1913 slum clearance that left only six synagogues, the cemetery and the Town Hall standing to the 77,297 names on the Pinkas walls.
  • Some listings put the museum admissions inside the price, as Jewish Quarter Tour with Tickets does at $74 with five entries named.
  • The cheapest walks start at $21.74 for Small Group Jewish Quarter Walk, a 2.5-hour guided option under $25.
  • Private formats such as Private Jewish Quarter Tour include the Jewish Museum and Old-New entrance fee and adapt the pace to you.

The honest downsides

  • The streets are free, so any walk that enters nothing competes with a route you can do alone with this page.
  • The ticket alone, Jewish Quarter Ticket at $51 with a 20-minute introduction, already covers every interior.
  • Nothing inside opens on Saturdays or Jewish holidays, which can sink a badly planned booking.
  • Group sizes run up to 20 on some walks such as Old Town, New Town and Jewish Quarter Tour, and one listing's review summary notes some travelers found it hard to hear in crowds.

Who it's NOT for: Anyone who wants a free day inside the synagogues, since no free option opens a single door.

Prague Jewish Quarter Tours: Your Questions

Is it worth visiting the Jewish Quarter in Prague?

Yes. Josefov holds Europe's oldest working synagogue, a cemetery with more than 12,000 tombstones and the Pinkas memorial to about 80,000 victims, and it sits a few minutes' walk from Old Town Square. The guided option that bundles entries and explaining is Jewish Quarter Tour with Tickets.

Do you need tickets to the Jewish Quarter in Prague?

You need a ticket for every interior: the Maisel, Pinkas, Spanish and Old-New synagogues and the Old Jewish Cemetery all sit on one Jewish Museum ticket. Walking the streets is free. The ticket is sold standalone as Jewish Quarter Ticket at $51.

Can I take a self-guided tour of the Jewish Quarter in Prague?

Yes. The route from Staroměstská metro past the Maisel and Pinkas synagogues to the cemetery and the Spanish Synagogue takes about 2-3 hours on the museum's own estimate, and the full plan is in A Self-Guided Route Through Josefov.

Which is the best synagogue to visit in Prague?

The Old-New Synagogue from the 13th century is the headline, but the Pinkas Synagogue's memorial wall of nearly 80,000 names is the most moving room, and the Spanish Synagogue has the Moorish interior. All are compared in The Synagogues and the Old Jewish Cemetery.

When is the Jewish Quarter closed?

The museum sites are closed every Saturday and on Jewish holidays, with the dates published on the museum calendar. Seasonal hours and the holiday pattern are laid out in Hours, Saturdays and Jewish Holidays.

Can you visit Terezin from Prague in a day?

Yes, it works as a half day. The fortress town lies about 70 km north and Terezin Tour from Prague runs 4.5 hours from the Rudolfinum with Small Fortress admission and a 1-hour guided tour included, while the in-depth option is Terezin Ghetto and Camp Tour at 6-7 hours.

Get the explaining and the entries together on the pick: a 2.5-hour walk through Josefov with admission to four synagogues and the Old Jewish Cemetery from $74.

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure for a full refund.
